YSU Brife History
On May 16, 1919, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Armenia decided to establish a university in Yerevan. The university was officially inaugurated on January 31, 1920, in a grand ceremony held in Alexandropol.
Yerevan State University – higher educational institution ranked Number One in Armenia – is the OLDEST & LARGEST UNIVERSITY in Armenia and one of the best in the region (2021-2022). It holds high world university ranking of 801-1000 as per QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS.
Dubbed as ‘The Mother University’, it facilitated the establishment of other higher education institutions in Armenia.
About 20 thousand students specialize in 20 faculties of the university. Thanks to highly qualified teaching staff, the university conducts important fundamental and applied research in various fields of modern science. The educational-scientific works at the university are organized in chairs and laboratories equipped with the latest equipment.
By now approximately 100 000 students have graduated from YSU. About 20000 students study at 19 faculties of this HEI. The educational process is conducted by more than 1600 highly qualified specialists and experts (207 professors, 581 associate professors, 375 assistants, 453 lecturers). 15 academicians of NAS RA and 19 associate members of NAS RA are also involved in the educational process of this higher education institution. The educational and research activities are organized at more than 100 chairs, which are periodically replenished with modern techniques and equipment.
YSU International Cooperation
Yerevan State University has agreements with some 285 universities and scientific centers of about 50 countries. The examples of cooperation include cooperation with the Joint Institute of Nuclear Researches (Russian Federation, Dubna), Arizona State University (USA), University of Rostock (Germany), University of Trier (Germany), University of Florence (Italy), Warsaw University (Poland) and others. Today YSU is widely involved in various international programs. YSU is the member of the International Association of Universities, European University Association, Association of Eurasian Universities, Black Sea University Network, AllianceUniversitesFrancaises. In the courses of previous years, about 8000 foreign students from 83 countries studied at YSU. More than 200 foreign citizens defended their PhD thesises at YSU.
